This piece joins with another rim fragment at the Ashmolean in Oxford (AE 509A). They come from a pithos (large storage jar), as indicated by the broad rim and holes for tying on a lid. The small lip above the rim also helped to keep the lid in place. The black painted chevrons are typical of the Geometric style of Cycladic pottery.
