Inscribed: IHS; and on the base: EX TESTAMENTO / JOHANNIS JOHNSON D.D. / LEGATUM
The donor, John Johnson DD (1776-1831), was a Fellow of Magdalen College from 1800 to 1827. He left money to Magdalen for three exhibitions in Theology or Classics, the recipients to come from Sussex, Surrey and Winchester College.
