Geoffrey Makins (1915-1944) was a pupil at Winchester (D, 1929-1932). He was killed in action in Normandy in 1944. A reading room in Moberly Library was refurbished in 1973 with a gift from the Makins family, and the painting was probably given to the College at that time.
