Athenian workshops manufactured large quantities of plain black pottery, which was exported across the Greek world. The style was popular from the 6^th to 3^rd centuries BC. Black-glaze (a misnomer, since they were painted black rather than glazed) wares were made for everyday use, but the quality of the potting is generally high and care was taken to achieve a smooth, shiny surface.
