The artist was at school at Winchester from 1887 to 1892 and studied classics and law at Trinity College, Cambridge before starting a career as a barrister in 1899. He worked at the Home Office during the First World War and only devoted himself to painting full time from 1925. The Greek pictures come from a Hellenic cruise made in 1929 and a visit to Northern Greece and Athens in 1931.
