This sample of Globigerina ooze was dredged from the South Atlantic Ocean bed during the Challenger Expedition that began in 1872 and was led by Captain George Strong Nares. The Nares family lived in Winchester and Mrs Nares attended some of our Natural History Society meetings where she exhibited specimens obtained on the expedition and at a later date, donated some of them to us.
