The sculpture features on the memorial gate for Major-General Herbert Stewart (1843-85), who studied at Winchester College from 1854 to 1862. The black and white photograph (taken around 1900) shows the gate in its original location at the entrance of the medieval cloister. It was moved to its current location in 1925.
