Nicholas Love (1572-1630) was born at Froxfield, Hampshire. He was a Scholar of Winchester College, 1581-90; Fellow at New College, 1590-1601; Headmaster of Winchester College, 1601-13, and Warden of Winchester College, 1613-30. He was the father of Nicholas Love, MP for Winchester during the Long Parliament and one of the judges at the trial of King Charles I.
This portrait is listed in the 1734 inventory of the Warden’s Gallery. It may have been among the portraits of past wardens bequeathed by Warden Nicholas in 1707.
