Inscribed around the underside of the base: Ex legato Oswaldi Ricardi Arturi Simpkin Custodis 1932-1936 [From the legacy of Osward Richard Arthur Simpkin, Warden 1932-1936]
For other pieces commissioned from the legacy of Warden Simpkin see Si28 and Si32. These vases were modelled on an earlier pair designed by Reginald Gleadowe, one of which featured on Edward McKnight Kauffer’s poster advertising the exhibition of modern silverwork at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1938. Gleadowe was Drawing Master at Winchester from 1923 to 1939.
