Inscribed around the outside: AGNUS DEI QUI TOLLIS PECCATA MUNDI MISERERE NOBIS [The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us]; on the underside: The gift of the Revd. John Gregson M.A. of Liverpool. Whitsunday. 1854. For the Chapel of Culham College. Oxon.
This paten is based on designs made by William Butterfield for the Ecclesiological Society, which appointed him to supervise a scheme for the manufacture of church plate. A similar design is reproduced in the Society’s publication Instrumenta Ecclesiastica (1847).
Along with Si208 (an offertory basin) and Si210 (a chalice), this paten was part of the chapel plate for Culham College, a teacher-training college in Oxfordshire that opened in 1853. The buildings were designed by Joseph Clarke in Neo-Gothic style. The chapel plate also follows the principles of the Gothic Revival and this paten is similar to medieval examples, such as the Wyke Paten in Winchester Cathedral.
