Oil on plaster, retouched with watercolour and acrylic (H. 141 cm, W. 745 cm); inscribed lower right: CHRISTOPHORUS HAWKES SCHOL. PRAE. INTV. DELINT. & PXT. A.D. MCMXXIV
The artist was a pupil at the school (Coll, 1918-24). The painting depicts a number of characters associated with Winchester in the 1920s, with accompanying inscriptions in Latin. The design, laid out in three narrative tiers, is based on the Bayeux Tapestry, with the main scene taking place in the middle band, and scenes of domestic life at the College occupying the upper and lower bands.
