A notice of the bequest of this painting (The Guardian, 24 February 1928, p. 9) describes it as ‘The Notary by Rembrandt’. None of the other paintings listed there remain at the College (Scotch Lake by Alexander Nasmyth; Dutch Port by Teniers the younger [sold Christie’s, January 1979]; Two Angels Flying by Albano; Portrait of a Lady by Gainsborough).
