Golding was born in 1710 at Midhurst. He was a Scholar of Winchester College, 1723-29; Fellow of New College, Oxford, 1729-57; Warden of Winchester College, 1757-63.

Another version of this portrait (Ao27) has been at the college since the 18^th century.
