Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province; Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period, c. 1690-95
Porcelain with underglaze blue decoration, repaired (D. 11 cm)
This small plate shows the demolition of a row of houses during the Rotterdam riots of 1690. One man is wielding a pick and another climbs on a ladder, while a group haul on ropes attached to a gable. A cannon stands in the foreground. The scene is found on numerous plates made in China for the European market and is based on a silver medal by Jan Smeltzing (1653-1696).
Provenance: Geoffrey Waters Ltd., London, 19 October 1996; accepted in lieu of Inheritance tax by HM Government from the estate of Anthony du Boulay in 2024 and allocated to the Winchester College Treasury Museum.
