This painting was commissioned as part of a new altar for Fromond’s Chantry, paid for with a donation from Edwin Freshfield OW (Fellow, 1888-1895). The reredos was made by Messrs Farmar and Brindley to designs by J.O. Scott.

The artist, C.E. Buckeridge, was the son of the architect Charles Buckeridge. He specialised in altarpieces for Anglican churches, painted in a 15^th-century style.

First panel inscribed: There shall come / A Star out / of Jacob Numbers XXIV.17.

Second panel inscribed: When they saw / the Star they / rejoiced

Central panel inscribed:  I am the / Rose of Sharon and the lily of the / valleys   Song of Solomon 11.1

Fourth panel inscribed:  With / exceeding great / joy   St Matthew 11.10.  

Fifth panel inscribed: I am the root and offspring / of David and the bright / and morning Star    Revelations XX11.16

On the lower right of the fourth panel is a Greek inscription, which translates: ‘Lord, in your kingdom remember your servants Edwin Freshfield and Zoe his wife and Edwin their son.’
