The artist, C.E. Buckeridge, was the son of the architect Charles Buckeridge. He specialised in altarpieces for Anglican churches, painted in a 15th-century style.
First panel inscribed: There shall come / A Star out / of Jacob Numbers XXIV.17.
Second panel inscribed: When they saw / the Star they / rejoiced
Central panel inscribed: I am the / Rose of Sharon and the lily of the / valleys Song of Solomon 11.1
Fourth panel inscribed: With / exceeding great / joy St Matthew 11.10.
Fifth panel inscribed: I am the root and offspring / of David and the bright / and morning Star Revelations XX11.16
On the lower right of the fourth panel is a Greek inscription, which translates: ‘Lord, in your kingdom remember your servants Edwin Freshfield and Zoe his wife and Edwin their son.’
