This portrait is not contemporary with the subject, but dates from the late 19th century (the stamp on the reverse of the canvas was used by Halford’s between 1886 and 1899). It is probably based on a lithograph of Lillywhite by John Corbet Anderson, published in 1854.
The first recorded owner of this picture was Evelyn Rockley Wilson, Assistant Master at Winchester College and an amateur first-class cricketer who played for Cambridge, Yorkshire and England (1920-1921). Following his death in 1957, it was purchased by H.A. Jackson, a former pupil and housemaster at Winchester. Jackson intended to present it to the England batsman Douglas Jardine OW (1900-1958), but Jardine died before the painting could be given to him.
Provenance: E.R. Wilson (1879-1957), from whose estate purchased in 1957 by H.A. Jackson (1884-1972), by whom bequeathed to Winchester College in 1972
Location: Headmaster’s Office
