Joseph Warton (1722-1800) was a Scholar of Winchester College, 1735-1740. After studying at Oriel College, Oxford he took holy orders and also developed a literary career as a poet and critic. He was Second Master of Winchester, 1755-66, and Headmaster, 1766-1793. This is a copy of Joshua Reynold’s portrait of Warton (1777) in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
