Provenance: Probably commissioned by John Penrose Cumming (Scholar of Winchester College, 1765-70; Fellow, 1800-10) and bequeathed in 1810 to his nephew Charles Lennox Cumming-Bruce (Commoner of Winchester College, 1803-07) of Altyre Lodge, Morayshire, where the painting hung until the mid 20th century. It was purchased from a Glasgow antique shop and given to Winchester College in 1965 by John Maclay, Lord Muirshiel and his nephews
