This painting is closely related to William Cave’s picture of the Trusty Servant (Ao51), which hangs next to the kitchens of Winchester College. The two versions are near identical, except for the background, which here shows the College chapel and tower.

Provenance: Probably commissioned by John Penrose Cumming (Scholar of Winchester College, 1765-70; Fellow, 1800-10) and bequeathed in 1810 to his nephew Charles Lennox Cumming-Bruce (Commoner of Winchester College, 1803-07) of Altyre Lodge, Morayshire, where the painting hung until the mid 20^th century. It was purchased from a Glasgow antique shop and given to Winchester College in 1965 by John Maclay, Lord Muirshiel and his nephews
