Robert Speckott Barter (1790-1861) was born in Cornworthy, Devon. He was a Scholar of Winchester College, 1803-1807, and Fellow of New College, Oxford, 1807-32. He returned to Winchester as Commoner Tutor, before becoming Tutor of New College, 1825-32. He was Warden of Winchester, 1832-61. This portrait was engraved by George Raphael Ward in 1849.
