William Andrewes Fearon (1841-1924) was a Scholar of Winchester College, 1851- ; Fellow and Tutor of New College, Oxford, 1864–1867; Assistant Master at Winchester, 1867-1882; Headmaster of Durham School, 1882-1884; Headmaster of Winchester, 1884–1901.

This painting was paid for by subscription through an appeal to Fearon’s former pupils. A replica was presented to Mrs Fearon and this was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1902 (no. 731). The cost of both pictures was £367.
