The artist was at school at Winchester from 1887-1892, and studied classics and law at Trinity College, Cambridge, before starting a career as a barrister in 1899. He worked at the Home Office during the First World War, and only devoted himself to painting full time from 1925. The Greek pictures come from journeys made in 1929 (a Hellenic cruise) and 1931 (Northern Greece and Athens).
